S34I at SPIE Sensors+Imaging 2024: Advancing Remote Sensing for Mineral Exploration
The S34I project was prominently featured at SPIE Sensors+Imaging 2024, held in Edinburgh, Scotland. As part of the SPIE Remote Sensing symposia, this event is recognised as Europe’s leading conference for researchers and scientists working on emerging sensor and photonic technologies that enable satellite-based atmospheric monitoring and Earth observation.

S34I Contributions to SPIE Remote Sensing 2024
The University of Porto, S34I’s coordinating institution, along with the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España – IGME), represented the project through various oral and poster presentations, showcasing innovative methodologies for mineral exploration and geospatial analysis. Key presentations included:
- Decision tree algorithms applied to detect mineral alteration related to cobalt-nickel mineralisation in Asturias: Insights from the S34I Project
- Presented by Ana Cláudia Teodoro (University of Porto)
- Automatic lineament extraction using Sentinel-1 data in the Ria de Vigo, Spain
- Presented by Joana Cardoso-Fernandes (University of Porto)
- Airborne images integration for a first cartographic approximation of critical raw-materials-rich placers on Santa Marta Beach (Ría de Vigo, NW Spain)
- Presented by Wai Long Ng Cutipa (IGME)

A Platform for Scientific Innovation and Collaboration
SPIE Remote Sensing 2024 provided an essential platform for engaging with leading experts in remote sensing, photonics, and mineral exploration. The conference facilitated discussions on how Earth Observation technologies can be further leveraged to support sustainable mining, environmental monitoring, and critical raw materials exploration.
By participating in this high-profile event, the S34I project reaffirmed its commitment to pioneering advanced remote sensing applications and contributing to the future of geospatial science and resource management.
